Weekly Budget Report

We’re starting the month with a surplus of over $750, thanks to the spouse’s hard work (cue guilt for me for being relatively useless).  We’re also able to set aside some funds for possible upcoming expenses, which is great.

As you can see, we’ve put an extra $3,000 into “rent” for this month, to start saving for moving expenses.  We’ve also put another $1,000 into gifts for holidays and hostess gifts for baby showers.  I’m not sure how much holidays we’ll actually do, but since we ALWAYS overspend at the holidays, it’ll be nice to have a bit of a buffer there, just in case.  If we don’t use it now, it’ll already be there for birthdays and whatnot anyway.

I’m scraping that money off into our savings account, since we use an online one that gets a better interest rate.  Also, it’s easier not to overspend it if it’s not in our primary account.  Sort of out of sight out of mind.

So, in total, we have $3,000 for moving, $1,000 for gifts, $6,700 for medical, and $2,500 in emergency savings.  That adds up to $13,200 in total cash savings, which if we need to move things around means about 3 months of savings.  We also have another $6,500 in investments that we can sell if push comes to shove and that puts us up to about 4 and a half months.  We’re not quite at the 6 months that everyone keeps going on about, but it’s a considerable improvement over the nothing we had previously.

So, I’m starting to feel better about our financial situation.  I just wish we could do something about the loans more quickly.
